Why would I join a sorority? All they do is party and drink. Though we take the time out to have fun, dance, and laugh with each other, we dedicate most of our time and efforts to community service and our philanthropies, while spreading awareness and learning about Asian culture. Joining Kappa Phi Lambda is more than just making new friends and meeting new people - being part of Kappa Phi Lambda will give you the life beneficial experiences, strength, maturity, and leadership ability that most girls do not experience in college. Our sisters are queens of multi-tasking, maintaining high GPAs while throwing many philanthropy events, doing community service, putting together cultural programs, interacting with other organizations, and performing step among other things. Each sister finds and develops their own talents and inner strenghs, which are utilized every day as a Kappa. Sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda graduate as bold, strong, independent, smart, and talented leaders with much life and career beneficial experiences. We understand that the media, gossip, or rumors may affect how a sorority is viewed, but we ask not to be judged by examples set by others. To find out more about Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, talk to any of our sisters and come out to our RUSH! I'm interested in joining Kappa Phi Lambda. How do I learn more about the sorority? If it is the beginning of the semester and Rush is not over yet, find out our Rush schedule and attend the next General Interest Meeting. Fliers (look for the color RED) should be posted around Rutgers and on this website to inform of exact time and dates. Also, if you know any sisters, all of us are happy to talk to you or answer any questions you any have about joining Kappa Phi Lambda anytime throughout the year. Catch one of us in person or shoot one of us an e-mail. Contact information can be found on the Officers page. What exactly is Rush? At the beginning of every semester, greek organizations (fraternities, sororities, and co-ed academic fraternities) hold events to recruit new members. If you decide to participate in our events, you become a rushee. As a rushee, all events are free and all rides to and from events are provided. Just come out and learn about us - if you feel the sorority is not right for you, you are not obligated to join. Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority holds many fun events such as General Interest Meetings, Spa Night, Bowling Night, and Game Night in order for interested girls to come out and have fun with the sisters. The General Interest Meeting is geared to inform you of us - our sisterhood, mission, values, and actions. The other events are held for the sisters to get to know YOU better and for YOU to get to know the sisters. There are plenty of opportunities to talk to sisters if you have further questions about the sorority. Just come out, learn about us, have lots of fun, and be you! Do I have to be Asian to join? Of course not. We are an Asian Interest Sorority not Asian Exclusive. Kappa Phi Lambda's mission is to strengthen sisterhood amongst women by providing service and promoting cultural diversity to our members and our society. Being that we are a chapter here at Rutgers University, one of the most diverse universities in the nation, we welcome and do not look down on any race or nationality. The sorority as a whole encourages diversity. As long as you share the goals and values of our sorority, you are more than welcome to join. How do I get a Bid? To be even considered for a bid, you need to attend 1 General Interest Meeting and at LEAST 50% of the Rush Events. At the end of Rush, you will need to attend an Interview where sisters will question you to learn more about YOU and what you have to offer to our sorority. We can tell you straight up that if you wish to join because "You want to party more" or "All your friends and family are doing it" or other reasons like those, you will not recieve a Bid from us. We look for girls who truely believe in our mission and values and desire to make a strong impact on the Asian community as a sister of Kappa Phi Lambda. The Interview is the final decision process and you will be notified a couple days after your Interview whether you will be given a Bid to pledge. What is Pledging? Is it hard? If you are given a bid and accept it, you are now a pledge. It is the final phase before you are initiated into our sorority. Our pledging process is designed to prepare you as pledges to become strong, influential sisters for a LIFETIME of sisterhood. During pledging, you will grow, learn, and bond. It is not easy, but nothing worth it in life is. If you make smart decisions and allocate your time wisely, you will be able to handle Pledging fine. Just remember to keep your eye on the goal - a lifetime of sisterhood. Will Pledging affect my grades? An important aspect of Pledging is time management. If you manage and use all your time efficiently, your grades should be fine. There have been sisters in the past who have completed a semester of pledging with GPA's of a 4.0 and GPA's over 3.5, sone of which were in Pharmacy School. Since Academic Integrity is a stressed value of Kappa Phi Lambda, all the sisters will work to ensure Pledges study and do well in their classes. Sisters are available for tutoring and Academic Counseling you need help. Study time is also allocated every week. Whether you take advantage of the opportunities offered is your choice. Is there information for my parents? Of course. It is good to have parental support if you choose to join Kappa Phi Lambda. Information for parents can be found here: http://www.kappaphilambda.org/sisters/parents.asp |
